Best Home Kegerator: Your Top 5 Choices

home kegerator

If you enjoy your beers and lagers, then a kegerator, delivering draft beer to you in the comfort of your home can be a perfect solution.

It is not only convenient for you, but it is also a real benefit when you are hosting parties. Not only does draft beer have a taste that is unique to beer from the barrel, but it can also save you money.

Buying your beer in bulk can be far less expensive than beer bought in individual cans and bottles.

In many locations, you can buy artisanal beers in kegs when they are not available in bottles or cans.

The question, often is, which kegerator to buy?

To help you make your decision, we have listed below a selection of five of the most popular kegerators on the market today.

EdgeStar Full Size Dual Tap Kegerator
EdgeStar Full Size Dual Tap Kegerator

Price: $540

This kegerator is designed to be freestanding rather than ‘under the counter’.

It can either be placed in a permanent position by using the adjustable feet or movable by swapping the feet for the included castors. When using two sixth barrel keg different beers can be dispensed from each tap.

The refrigerator can cool the kegs, down to the low 30s. This chilling is perfect for getting a crisper taste with lagers.

Including the height of the dispenser taps, this unit measures 48. 5″ high x 20.1″ wide x 24.8″ deep. Inside the storage area is large enough to take either;

  • 1 x full size keg (124 pints)
  • 1 x pony keg (62 pints)
  • 1 x slim pony keg (62 pints)
  • 2 x sixth barrel keg (42 pints each)
  • 2 x Cornelius Homebrew kegs (40 pints each)

The EdgeStar will not take the kegs typically used by Coors and Miller. This is due to the bulge in the barrel. This bulge in the barrels gives them an overall diameter of 17” at the bulge, which is too large for the refrigerator.

EdgeStar Stainless Steel Dual Tap Kegerator

EdgeStar Stainless Steel Dual Tap Kegerator

Price: $557

This EdgeStar Kegerator Dual Tap has exactly the same dimensions and capacities as the EdgeStar Full Size Dual Tap (see above). The only difference between the two is that this version has a finish in more durable stainless steel.

Kegco K309B-1
Kegco K309B-1, Black

Price: $630

The K309B-1 is a full size, single tap kegerator, with a high-efficiency, energy saving design.

This energy saving feature can reduce energy costs by up to 25%.

It is mounted on castors, which can be locked, to allow easy movement.

A really useful feature is the Deep Chill function; this allows the chiller to operate for up to 24 hours to help quickly cool down a warm keg. There is a large internal fan to make sure that an even cooling temperature is maintained throughout the refrigerator.

The cooler has the ability to reduce the temperature, which is shown on a digital readout, down to 32 degrees.

Excluding the height of the dispenser tap the unit measures 33″ high x 23.7″ wide x 24″ deep. Internally the storage area has the capacity to take either;

  • 1 x full size keg (124 pints)
  • 1 x pony keg (62 pints)
  • 1 x slim pony keg (62 pints)
  • 2 x 5 gallon commercial kegs and 1 x home brew keg (120 pints total)
  • 3 x home brew kegs (120 pints total)

When not used for storing kegs, the cooler has two adjustable shelves that makes it ideal as an extra refrigerator.

Edgestar Ultra Low Temp Home Brew

EdgeStar Ultra Low Temp Dual Tap Kegerator

Price: $755

The EdgeStar Ultra Low Temp Dual Tap Kegerator has exactly the same specifications as the stainless steel EdgeStar Full Size Dual Tap Kegerator (see above).

The only difference is that this version comes complete with 2 x reconditioned Cornelius Homebrew kegs, each with a 40 pint capacity.

Included, in addition to the standard ‘D’ couplers are two home brew conversion kits to allow you to dispense from the included barrels.

K309B-2 Kegerator
Kegco K309B-2

Price: $760

The K309B-2 exactly the same as the K309B-1 with the only difference being that, whereas the K309B-1 has a single dispenser tap, the K309B-2 has two, mounted on to a single pillar. For full details on the refrigerator, see above for specifications.

Notes;

  • All of the above come complete with a cylinder for the CO2. To comply with shipping regulations, the tank is always shipped empty.
  • To fill the cylinder, the best places are usually local welding gas supply companies.
  • A fully charged 5 lb. cylinder of CO2 will dispense typically from 10 to 14 half sized kegs.
  • A keg of beer will stay fresh for about 6 weeks. Pasteurized kegs will stay fresh longer, typically up to 12 weeks.
  • The beer lines should be cleaned after each keg or every two weeks. This is necessary to maintain both the taste and appearance of the dispensed beer.

All of the above kegerators arrive with the refrigerator complete and the dispensing equipment needing some assembly work. This is quite straightforward and fully explained in the user manual that arrives with the kegerator.

No particular skills are needed to be able to carry out this simple assembly, and you can expect this basic assembly work to take about 30 minutes.

Final Notes

All the above kegerators are very popular due to the value for money that they provide, the flexibility in size of the kegs that they will accommodate and the ability to keep the beer cool and in perfect condition to dispense.

A good quality kegerator can add that finishing touch to either your home bar or a great addition to make your party run that little bit smother.

Although there is a little initial investment involved, the price of the beer will quickly mitigate this outlay.
